The Best Southern Food in Nashville

Nashville is known for hospitality, great music, and FOOD.
New restaurants with amazing chefs are popping up around town, but you can’t beat classic southern food. There’s something about going to eat in a warm comforting environment where the cooks have refined their craft for 20+ years. We’ve got some of the best southern food joints in the country, and Edley’s is excited to share some of our favorites. We’ve got a few staples that we love, and you will too.
The slogan says it best, “Home is where the biscuits are.” Loveless Cafe has been serving up fried chicken and biscuits since 1951. Nashville natives and visitors flock to Loveless to experience the joys of eating a home-cooked southern meal with everything from southern vegetables to chicken fried chicken to homemade desserts. Loveless is located along the Natchez Trace southwest of Nashville. The drive is gorgeous! And we recommend checking out nearby Percy Warner Park for a hike.
We happen to love the classic biscuits and gravy, but take a trip and decide for yourself. And while you’re there, take home a jam or two from the general store. Loveless is open from 7am-9pm seven days a week.
Arnold’s has been serving customers since 1982. Everyone from music legends to us ordinary folks have enjoyed the meat and three. It’s so popular that you’ll more than likely see a line out the door, but don’t worry, it moves fast. The menu is different every day of the week. On Monday you can expect roast beef, blackened trout, fried chicken and the best southern sides in town like green beans, mashed potatoes, pinto beans, fried apples and more! Arnold’s is located downtown Nashville and in Green Hills. They are only open for lunch, so plan accordingly!
Known for their burgers and fries, Rotier’s has been around since 1945! It has become a staple in Nashville located on Elliston Place close to the Vanderbilt campus. The southern fare includes mouth-watering chicken and dressing, beef tips, fried okra, fresh greens, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and the riches milkshakes among other great dishes. The atmosphere is family friendly and true to the Nashville vibe.
Nashvillians love Monell’s. The meals are served family style around a big table and plate after plate comes out of the kitchen overflowing with every southern comfort food imaginable. Plates pass to the left, and you can take as much as you want. For breakfast (Saturday and Sunday), it’s all you can eat biscuits and gravy, homemade peach preserves, corn pudding, cheese grits, etc. For dinner, classics like pork chops, pot roast, fried chicken, cornbread, and many other southern dishes are served. You are guaranteed to leave very full and maybe with some new friends as well. Monell’s serves guests out of 3 locations – Germantown, at The Manor on Murfreesboro Pike and Berry Hill.

Edley’s Bar-B-Que is a Nashville institution, one that unites the Nashville tradition of meat and three with the best Bar-B-Que this side of the Mississippi. They don’t stop at smoked meats. You’ll find eight to ten southern style side dishes prepared daily (see the menu). When you walk through the door at Edley’s Bar-B-Que, you are welcomed like an old family friend and then they make every effort to make sure you are comfortable and full when you leave. You can enjoy Edley’s at their two locations (soon to be three!), on 12th South and in East Nashville.
